From Thrift Store to Treasure: Create Your Own Vintage-Inspired Painted Vase

A Little Paint, a Little Imagination, and a Whole Lot of Charm!
By B² Expressions | Creative Corner
Have you ever walked through a thrift store, spotted an old glass vase, and thought, Well, that's not very pretty?
What if I told you that the very same vase could become a beautiful piece of home décor with just a little paint and creativity?
Sometimes the prettiest things in our homes aren't the ones we spend the most money on. They're the ones we put a little of ourselves into.
Today, we're taking an ordinary glass vase and transforming it into a beautiful, vintage-inspired pottery piece. The best part? You don't need to be an experienced painter, and you probably already have some of the supplies at home!
Project difficulty: Beginner
Active project time: Approximately 30–45 minutes
Estimated cost: $5–$15, depending on supplies
Drying time: Several hours or longer
🎨 What You'll Need
An old glass or ceramic vase
Acrylic craft paint in your favorite color
Baking soda
A small mixing bowl
A paintbrush (preferably a medium flat brush)
A sponge or stiff-bristle brush (optional)
Fine-grit sandpaper (optional)
Rubbing alcohol and a clean cloth
Clear matte sealer suitable for painted decorative surfaces (optional)
Dried flowers, faux greenery, or decorative branches
B² Creative Tip: Check your local thrift stores, yard sales, or even your own cabinets before buying a vase. Sometimes the best project is something you already own!
Step 1: Find Your Perfect Vase
Start by choosing a vase with an interesting shape.
Don't worry about its color or pattern. We're going to cover that up!
Look for something with a wide bottom, narrow neck, or beautiful curves. Those shapes often look especially pretty with a vintage pottery finish.
A vase with an unusual shape can become a real statement piece.
Step 2: Clean and Prepare
Wash your vase thoroughly with soap and water, then let it dry completely.
Wipe the outside with a little rubbing alcohol to remove any remaining oils or residue.
This helps your paint adhere better.
For very glossy surfaces, you may need a primer designed for glass or ceramic. Always follow the product instructions.
Step 3: Mix Your Textured Paint
Here's where the magic begins!
In a small bowl, mix:
2 tablespoons acrylic paint + 1 teaspoon baking soda
Stir until combined.
The baking soda creates a slightly grainy, textured finish that resembles handmade pottery.
Want a thicker texture? Add a little more baking soda.
Want a smoother finish? Use less.
Remember, you can always experiment on a small surface first!
Step 4: Paint Your Vase
Using your flat paintbrush, begin applying the mixture to the outside of your vase.
Work in small sections, using gentle strokes.
Don't worry about making every brushstroke perfect. Slight imperfections are part of the charm.
Allow the first coat to dry completely before applying a second coat.
Most vases will need two or three thin coats for good coverage.
B² Creative Tip: Try lightly dabbing the paint with a sponge while it's still wet. This creates an uneven, handmade texture that looks beautiful when dry.
Step 5: Add a Little Vintage Character
Once your vase is completely dry, it's time to give it some personality.
Try lightly brushing a slightly darker shade around the bottom, neck, and raised areas.
For a creamy white vase, try a little taupe or warm gray.
For a terracotta vase, use a deeper brown.
For a sage green vase, try muted olive or charcoal.
Use very little paint on your brush and gently blend the color into the textured surface.
The goal is to create soft variations that make your vase look aged and handcrafted.
You can also lightly sand a few raised areas after the paint has fully cured, if desired.
Step 6: Protect Your Creation
If you'd like additional protection, apply a compatible clear matte sealer according to its instructions.
Remember that this is a decorative finish, not a food-safe or waterproof coating. Keep it on the outside of the vase and avoid soaking or scrubbing the painted surface.
For best results, use dried flowers or artificial arrangements. If using fresh flowers, place a separate waterproof liner inside and keep the painted exterior dry.
Step 7: Style Your New Vase
Now comes my favorite part!
Add your favorite greenery, dried flowers, or decorative branches.
Try arranging your vase on:
A wooden tray with candles
A fireplace mantel
A bookshelf with old books
A dining room centerpiece
An entryway table
A bathroom counter with soft neutral accessories
You can even make two or three vases in different sizes for a coordinated collection.
✨ Make It Your Own!
One of the things I love most about art is that there are no rules saying everything has to look exactly the same.
Here are a few combinations to try:
French Country Elegance: Creamy white with soft taupe shading and delicate lavender stems.
Rustic Farmhouse: Warm terracotta with dried wheat and eucalyptus.
Vintage Garden: Dusty sage green with white wildflowers.
Modern Minimalist: Matte charcoal with simple branches.
Romantic Cottage: Soft blush pink with dried baby's breath.
Don't be afraid to mix colors, experiment with texture, or create a look that's completely different from mine.
That's what makes it yours!
❤️ A Little Something to Remember
Creativity doesn't have to be expensive.
You don't need a studio full of supplies, years of experience, or the most expensive materials.
Sometimes all you need is an old vase, a little paint, and the willingness to try something new.
And if your first attempt doesn't turn out exactly how you imagined?
Paint over it and try again!
Some of my favorite creative discoveries come from experimenting.
At B² Expressions, I believe that beautiful things don't always have to be bought. Sometimes, they're waiting for us to create them.
Until our next creative adventure,
B² Expressions
Imagine it. Create it. Make it yours.
